“I had always been struck by the anonymity of the people in the orange suits. Yet in fleeting moments, as I passed them, or they passed me, foreign faces became familiar. Wanting to know more, I opened my window. As I got to know them, and heard their stories, I took a series of portrait photographs of these newspaper vendors on the streets of Dublin. Each portrait was titled with a short personal line from that day in their lives, acting as a counterpoint to the sensationalist headlines emblazoned on their orange suits. They had a story to tell. Bloody Good Headline is that story. ”

“The power of Paul Quinn’s original idea was in the contradiction of these figures who we always see but never hear from. They are among the most visible characters in the city and the least audible. The nature of their work informed the nature of the shooting and in turn the pace and rhythm of our finished film. The lights go red and they walk. The lights go green and they stop. Occasionally they make a sale; mostly they do not. Mostly they walk, or they wait.

My ambition was to give these characters their voices in a way that doesn’t patronise or idolise them, but that honours their role as unique observers in the noise and chaos of a modern city.”

“We are very grateful that the Irish Film Board / Bord Scannán na hÉireann decided to support Bloody Good Headline under their Reality Bites funding scheme.

The short documentary form is challenging but hugely rewarding. The challenge here was to make a film that features 4 languages - English, Portuguese, Spanish, Polish. The reward was the feeling that we were giving voice to people that are usually silent as we pass them by.”

Shane Hogan Producer

“Blood Good Headline presented a really unique and exciting sound design challenge. When myself and Tom first discussed what he was hoping the sound post process could bring to the film, he mentioned making a mix that was immersive and experiential; as viewers, we are always looking at these men as they work, making their way through the roaring traffic in their different parts of the city; the task was to reflect this from their point of view in the sound we shaped and crafted for the finished film.

My process after these initial discussions, was to visit each of these locations in the city and to record the range of sounds heard in each unique space. We knew we needed each location to have it's own distinct sonic character, to reflect it's reality, but also to compliment and underscore what each of the men discuss as their experience of their work and time in each of these assigned locations. We spent a good deal of time building the sound of each of these locations from many elements we could shape into a surround mix, to put the audience into these men's world.

When you work on material that is as rich, honest and interesting as the interviews each of these men give, and that is complimented by such a well paced edit and beautiful footage, it is important for the sound to add and work with the material on screen and to not get in the way of the powerful truth being shared by each of these men. I hope we achieved this in the final mix!”
